About Sophie Yan

I am a Detroit-based designer and educator working across architecture, interiors, furniture, and textiles. I create sensory-rich spaces and objects that invite touch, spark curiosity, and encourage meaningful connection to our surroundings.

My work often asks: what makes us hold on to and care for the spaces and objects in our lives? I explore both the practical side - durability, adaptability, and usefulness - and the more intangible side, where memory, embodiment, and lived experience give design lasting value. I believe design should grow from close observation, hands-on making, and authentic collaboration with clients and communities.

Alongside my professional practice, I’m an Assistant Professor and the Program Director of Interior Design at Lawrence Technological University. My work has been featured in ArchDaily, Dwell, and The Architect’s Newspaper, and exhibited internationally at events including Milan Design Week.

I’m NCIDQ certified and open to design projects, consulting, and creative partnerships. If you’d like to connect, you can reach me at [email protected].
